Florida Fungi Diversity Project

The backbone project of Florida Mycological Society, the Florida Fungi Diversity Project is set to help map the Biodiversity of Fungi though in situ publicly available documentation using iNaturalist and in house DNA barcoding utilizing ITS and TEF1 gene regions performed by President John Cook with DNA validation by Scott Ostuni.

Florida Native Gourmet Fungi Cultivation Project

Through science driven data over a number of years, it has become evident that mushroom cultivation at a large scale can spur the release of non-native fungi, as shown though the rapid naturalization of Gold Oyster and Pink Oyster in the United States. Due to this realization, Florida Mycological Society has partnered with Florida Shroom King Mushroom Farm to assist with trials for commercial viability, we find it vital to provide access to Florida-based gourmet mushroom farms and at home cultivators with trialed Florida native cultures of gourmet mushrooms that maintain as strong economic value as traditional commercial strains. We aim to induce a breeding program for Florida genetics of Lions mane and oyster mushrooms to further facilitate this program.

We are more than happy to receive any specimens you may find and would like to contribute to this project for cloning, for more information email us at:

FloridaMycologicalSociety@gmail.com

Please provide iNaturalist observation links if possible, this allows us to publicly verify the culture is of Florida origin and provide more robust data on each specimen, specimens may be traded for a culture or grow kit of the specimen you provided

If you are a mushroom farm and would like to participate in these trails please send us an email

Florida Ganoderma Diversity and Cultivation Project

The goal of this project is to accurately outline the species of Ganoderma present in Florida due to this fungi's remarkable ability to improve human health as well as Florida being home to many unique specimens, yet to be elucidated. Florida Mycological Society has partnered with Florida Shroom King Mushroom Farm in order to collect and trial a vast library of useful Ganoderma for commercial cultivation available to the public though the Florida Mycological Society (cultures will available for purchase in the future). Through collecting and trailing hundreds of Ganoderma, we aim to find the most beneficial genetics for the improvement of human health.

We are more than happy to receive any specimens you may find and would like to contribute to this project for cloning, for more information email us at:

Join The Florida Mycological Society Today. Our meetings consist of a monthly mushroom walk meet up that are generally held on a trail within Volusia, Orange, and Seminole county and at times one of the other surrounding counties. We do host classroom club meeting as well and often have additional optional meetups and these might include trail cleanups, night time UV walks, and special classes focused on mushroom identification, cultivation and functionality.
