iNaturalist

Document fungi for conversion and science
iNaturalist is a desktop and mobile application for Apple and Android that allows users to upload photographs and other data on fungi for community scientists, professional mycologists and other scientists to better research fungi while supporting conservation though biodiversity mapping and DNA barcoding. Anyone can join to upload observations to this open source application. iNaturalist can be a handy way to identify mushrooms though peer-reviewed identification suggestions.
How to document fungi
Collecting proper photographs is key to collect accurate representation of a specimen for recording data and identification.
Photographs & Data collection
- Photograph the environment, noting host trees when relevant and the mushroom in situ, or as is undisturbed.
- Brush off excessive debris and photograph clear images of the cap, stem and gills of the mushroom from multiple angles, taking multiple photos.
- Unearth the mushroom or remove from the tree in a manner that can preserve the base. A knife may be useful for securing the base while digging.
- Assort different stages of growth together if multiple specimens are available.
- Some genius like Ganoderma requires a bi-section to identify some species. Collect data on the interior of the mushroom when relevant and note and photograph any bruising or color changes when cut or damaged.
- Note any smells or tastes of the mushroom (DO NOT CONSUME WILD MUSHROOMS YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED WITH)
- Apply reagents or UV light if on hand, photograph and note color changes
Steps 4 -7 are optional and aid in the identification of mushrooms with information and photographs taken in the field.
